shOUT Youth Chorus
Between 16-29 years old and love to sing? Then shOUT Youth Chorus could be just the right place for you!
shOUT (formerly the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Youth Chorus) was founded in 2005, and is Australasia’s first gay and lesbian youth chorus. We provide young people aged between 16 and 29 with a fantastic, safe and friendly environment in which to develop their singing skills.
Our current Musical Director is Jaclyn Lanera.
Recently celebrating our 10th anniversary year, we have become one of Melbourne’s leading LGBTIQ organisations, providing a safe social, supportive and musical environment for all members. shOUT is a chorus of the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus Inc – in other words, a “choir within a choir”. With our own weekly rehearsals, we explore great music through singing, and along with the Melbourne Gay & Lesbian Chorus (MGLC), perform at various events around Melbourne and Victoria each year.hOUT
What do we get up to?
shOUT has performed at Midsumma Carnival and the Minus18 Same Sex and Gender Diverse Formal over the last few years, along with being involved with many other Midsumma events such as Brimbank Council’s Pride Picnic.
We have performed at Pride Week at Monash University and La Trobe University, whilst also engaging with the community through participation in several Equal Love rallies in Melbourne.
In 2013, we performed in our very own ‘Same Love’ concert, which was a resounding success, showcasing the group and individual talents of our members.
shOUT also performs regularly with the main chorus of MGLC; with 2014 seeing us involved in “Our Big Gay Wedding”, “Inner Diva” and “No Place I’d Rather Be”. We also join MGLC for several outreach events each year, including performances for World Aids Day and Carols by Queerlight.
shOUT is involved in a number of youth community outreach events each year, including working with the Safe Schools Coalition Victoria and other Minus18 events.
How you can sing with us
We welcome people between 16 and 29 years of age of all musical backgrounds and abilities (from beginners to the more advanced). We have intakes for new members usually 2 to 3 times a year, just after a concert.
Where do we rehearse?
We rehearse every Wednesday evening from 5:45m – 7pm at the Church of All Nations in Carlton.
Members also regularly attend rehearsals of the main chorus after a short break (MGLC rehearses 7.15pm – 9.45pm)
