Then the Youth Chorus may be just the right place for you!
The Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Youth Chorus (the Youth Chorus), founded in 2005, is Australasia’s first gay and lesbian youth chorus. We provide young people aged between 16 and 29 with a fantastic, safe and friendly environment in which to develop their singing skills.
The Youth Chorus is a chorus of the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus Inc – in other words, a “choir within a choir”. We have our own weekly rehearsals and members over 18 years old also sing with the Melbourne Gay & Lesbian Chorus (MGLC) to further their singing experience.
What we’ve been up to recently:
The Youth Chorus performed their first headline concert at Gasworks Theatre as part of National Youth Week in April 2010. The sell-out show, entitled The Sound of Youth, was a huge success and cemented its important place in the Melbourne queer community.
The Youth Chorus performed alongside Dolly Diamond and Luke Gallagher for the 2010 {ALSO} Awards. (June) and for HatsOff 2010 (August)
Our regular gigs:
The Youth Chorus performs regularly with MGLC for its biannual concerts series, including for MGLC’s 20th anniversary celebration concert in October 2010
The Youth Chorus joins MGLC for several outreach events each year, including performances for World Aids Day and Carols by Queerlight.
The youth chorus is also involved in a number of youth community outreach events each year.
Recordings:
In 2008 the Youth Chorus recorded its first CD, Count Me In, made up of an eclectic mix of songs ranging from gospel, latin, rock and contemporary ballads. It is a remarkable recording from a very talented group of young singers whose energy and commitment to singing shines in this recording.
Eligibility:
The Youth Chorus welcomes people between 16 and 29 years of age of all musical backgrounds and abilities (from beginners to the more advanced).
Rehearsals:
In the suburb of Carlton, just off Lygon St, every Wednesday evening from 6pm – 7pm.
Youth Chorus members also regularly attend rehearsals of the main chorus after a short break (MGLC rehearses 7.15pm – 9.45pm).
